Greetings from Finland! I would need some advice or help. We do surveying with the mentioned total station, and in robotic mode the radio connection is lost every once and a while in range of 120-160 meters between tachymeter and prism/CU. Edit: the range should be in good conditions near 500 meters or so, if i have understood correctly. The radio is the older one which works in the 70cm radio band (black brick radio with red power-on light on top). We have changed the antennas, batteries, tried to look for bad / loose connections, all kinds of normal cures. But, it still drop´s the connection every once and a while. If i only could get a copy of the GeoRadio´s repair/maintenance/service manual, it would be of great help. I know it is "old" piece of equipment, and should maybe get upgraded to the ghz-radio sys, but still any comments / experiences on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Has someone of You boys or girls confronted this same radio connection problem, and maybe even solved it? Thanks for the answers in advance, I. Arvola Finland
Why do you work with old radios when there are new solutions? You can find a similar device at auction ebay.com For more specific tips provide as a model of the instrument (total station) and radio modems. You can show photo.
Hello, thank You for the reply. For the moment, i have to work with the equipment i have :) Money is an issue here, as it is in many other cases.. Upgrade after one, maybe five years, who knows.. And as long as the gear works / is repairable, i´d be happy with that. Also, everything radio related is a hobby of mine, so i tinker with these also because of self-educational purposes. Radio works otherwise fine, no data corruption, but the range is somewhat limited because of these odd connection drop-downs. The total station is Trimble model 5605 with DR200+. Have to try those, sooner or later. Thanks for the tip. News on the the topic: now the 5605 has "lost" the whole radio. Does it has to be connected to a service/maintenance software / computer when changing tachymeters backup batteries? Maybe some firmware needs to be run again in the machine after such operation.. EDIT: In this setup, there are only cablings with Hirose- type connectors. No DB-9 / RS232 serial port. Tachymeter stands alone, and at the Prism end is the CU and radio docked to the prism stake. Any info / pin-out concerning the data transfer via Hirose-connectors would be greatly appreciated. I.A.

Precisely :D this needs a motherload of "private engineering" Well, the power source (accumulators) is brand new, voltages measured, everything is fine. Accum. Change for a set of new ones was the first repair attempt abt. Half years ago.
It happens. Try to give a voltage from an external power source. Then Check the range of the radio. Maybe blame the battery contacts. Old contacts are oxidized. They can be treated with a special tool. (Ask a question in the radio shop)
Yes.. All of the above is done. No help from external power source, power contacts have been treated. This case is now anyway partially solved, for we had to take this piece of equipment to the dealers service/repair workshop. Of course they did not tell us exactly what was going on in the machine, but they said that some software adjustments were made to the radio part of the 5605 tachymeter. Now the range is ok, we can make surveys in range of 250 meters and beyond. No radio conn. disruptions anymore. NOTE: It happened so, that when i un-soldered the two internal button batteries (of the tachymeter) for changing them for a pair of fresh ones, the tachymeter lost it´s firmware. As a general advice for everyone: if you decide to change the internal memory button batteries is Trimble 5605 or similar, make sure to provide aux. 3V voltage for the time batteries being removed from, and the new ones installed to the circuit board to prevent loss of firmware.
